Why fruit symbols never left
The fruit came from a legal workaround. Early twentieth-century machines paid out in chewing gum to sidestep gambling restrictions, and the flavours — cherry, lemon, plum — became the symbols. The BAR is a stylised packet of gum from the same era. A century later the iconography is pure shorthand: you know instantly what kind of game you are looking at.
That shorthand is now attached to wildly different maths.
